The 747 has been produced in two variants. The JT8D has not proved to be an engine of choice for twin jets. The single-engine JT8D was selected over two other engines for the 747 to allow a wide fuselage. Carrying enough fuel for a round-the-world flight, then converting into a tanker aircraft later. The 747 has also been an important workhorse of space travel, making the one-way trip from Earth to the Moon and back using only two 747s (later three) by the end of the Apollo program. The Boeing 747 has been a workhorse of international air travel since its introduction in the late 1960s.
